1994 international beach clean up exercise at the bar beach Lagos, Nigeria. OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F.; Folorunsho, R.; Isebor, C.; Adegbie, A.T.; Dublin-Green, C.O..
At the request of the United States of America Centre for Marine Conservation, the Nigeria Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research organised a beach clean up at the Bar Beach Lagos on September 24 1994. An International beach clean up is usually held on the last Saturday of every September during the COASTWEEK. On this day, volunteers all over the world participate in a beach clean up in an effort to collect data and information on the types and amounts of debri littering the world's beaches. Volunteers for the Bar Beach clean up of 1994 were drawn from all works of life and some Federal and States agencies. A total of 10,872 pieces of different kinds of debri weighing 531.1kg were collected during the clean up. Further analysis of the different...

Bar Beach Victoria Island Erosion Problem: A Critical Assessment as at October 30th 2002 and Need For Urgent Mitigating Measures OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F..
The Bar Beach on Victoria Island has been the scene of very active erosion in the past since the construction of the east and west moles between 1908 and 1912. The moles were constructed to protect the dredged deep (Commodore Channel) entrance into the Lagos harbor from intense wave action and the silting up of the channel. The construction of breakwaters interrupted the long-shore transport of sand from west of the west mole to the east along the shoreline. The interference has resulted in the trapping of about 0.5 and 0.75 million cubic meters of sand per year behind the west mole leading to an accreting Lighthouse beach on the western side of the harbour entrance. However, the Bar beach on the down-drift side is starved of sediments. Studies carried out...

Coral bank obstructions to trawling in the middle to outer continental shelf east and west of Lagos. OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F..
The continental shelf east and west of Lagos [long.2o.04.00E to long.4o 00’.00”E] is narrow shelf ranging in width between 25 to 30 kilometers. Echograms from several NIOMR’s cruises reveal the presence of some isolated and in some cases continuous bands of dead Holocene coral banks, within the middle to outer continental shelf [40-120m depth]. The most prominent of these structures are ones occurring between 75-100m of water and running almost parallel to the coastline. The dead coral structures are non-reef forms. They are found either as continuous Bands of rough bottom with width ranging between, 100 to 3,500m or in isolated pinnacled shapes. The pinnacled forms reach heights of over 7 meters in some cases. These coral structures pose obstructions to...

Heavy minerals in the Nigeria river sediments OceanDocs
Awosika, L.F.; Akpati, B.N..
Analysis of 450 sediment samples from various rivers in Nigeria have resulted in the identification of seven major drainage systems some of which may be potential sources of heavy mineral contribution to the continental shelf. The seven major drainage systems are: (1) Niger/Benue drainage system with coarse to medium size sediments and a high of 90% opaque mineral concentration in many cases. Some gem heavy minerals like garnet and zircon are also recorded. (2) Gombi drainage system: consists of medium to coarse sand. Opaque mineral concentrations are also high. Up to 90.59% at station BO.99.3. (3) Bauchi Plateau drainage system: Sediments from this drainage system are very coarse and highly angular. This drainage system records the highest overall opaque...
